Henry's Law

Calculate gas solubility at different pressures

⚗️Henry's Law Calculator (C=P/kH)

O2≈769, CO2≈29

Henry's Law states that at constant temperature, the concentration of a dissolved gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas above the liquid. C = P / kH.

  1. 1C = P / kH (where kH is Henry's law constant, units L·atm/mol)
  2. 2Or: P = kH × C
  3. 3Temperature-dependent: gases become less soluble at higher temperatures
  4. 4kH for O₂ ≈ 769 L·atm/mol · kH for CO₂ ≈ 29.4 L·atm/mol
CO₂ at 1 atm · kH=29.4 L·atm/mol=C = 1/29.4 = 0.034 mol/LDissolved CO₂ in carbonated drinks

Fun Fact

Henry's Law explains why opening a carbonated drink releases CO₂ — the reduced pressure above the liquid means less CO₂ can remain dissolved. Temperature matters too: warm fizzy drinks go flat faster.
