A shelving load calculator determines safe shelf span and thickness for a given material and load. A 1×10 pine shelf spanning 36 inches can hold roughly 20–30 lbs before sagging; a 3/4-inch plywood shelf can hold considerably more. Shelf pins and brackets should be rated for the intended load.
