Torque Calculator

Calculate torque from force and moment arm

Torque Calculator

Torque is the rotational equivalent of force — the tendency of a force to cause rotation around an axis. Torque = Force × Perpendicular distance from axis. It is measured in Newton-metres (N·m) or foot-pounds (ft·lb).

  1. 1Torque (τ) = Force (F) × Lever arm distance (r) × sin(angle)
  2. 2Maximum torque: when force is perpendicular to lever arm (sin 90° = 1)
  3. 3Torque and angular acceleration: τ = I × α (moment of inertia × angular acceleration)
50N force at 0.3m lever arm perpendicular=15 N·m torque50 × 0.3 × sin(90°) = 15

Fun Fact

A typical car engine produces 200–400 N·m of torque. Formula 1 car engines (before hybrid) produced 330 N·m but at 18,000 RPM — the power comes from speed, not torque alone.
