The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation calculates the pH of a buffer solution containing a weak acid and its conjugate base. pH = pKa + log([A⁻]/[HA]). It is fundamental in biochemistry for maintaining physiological pH.

Buffer capacity

Buffers work best when pH is within ±1 of pKa. Outside this range, the buffer loses effectiveness because one of the acid/base pair becomes negligible.

Fun Fact

Blood is a bicarbonate buffer system (pKa 6.1) maintained at pH 7.4. Deviations of ±0.4 units cause acidosis or alkalosis — life-threatening conditions.
