🍚Rice to Water Ratio Calculator
The rice-to-water ratio is critical for perfectly cooked rice. Different rice types absorb different amounts of water. The absorption method (where all water is absorbed) differs from the pasta method (where rice is boiled in excess water and drained).
- 1Absorption method: rice absorbs all water during cooking
- 2White rice: 1 cup rice to 2 cups water (1:2 ratio)
- 3Brown rice: 1 cup rice to 2.5 cups water (longer cooking time)
- 4Basmati/jasmine: 1 cup rice to 1.5–1.75 cups water
- 5Altitude, pan size, and lid quality affect results — adjust by ±¼ cup
1 cup white rice=2 cups water, cook 18 min coveredYields ~3 cups cooked rice (serves 2–3)
2 cups brown rice=5 cups water, cook 40–45 minBrown rice needs more water and time
