An aspect ratio calculator determines the proportional relationship between width and height, expressed as W:H. It lets you scale dimensions while preserving the original ratio to prevent distortion.
- 1Aspect Ratio = Width : Height, simplified by dividing both by their GCD
- 2GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) found using the Euclidean algorithm
- 3Scale by width: New Height = Original Height × (New Width ÷ Original Width)
- 4Scale by height: New Width = Original Width × (New Height ÷ Original Height)
1920 × 1080 pixels=Aspect ratio 16:9 — scale to 1280 wide gives 720 height
2560 × 1440 pixels=Aspect ratio 16:9 — scale to 1920 wide gives 1080 height
1024 × 768 pixels=Aspect ratio 4:3 — scale to 800 wide gives 600 height
| Ratio | Common Name | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 16:9 | Widescreen | HD and 4K TV, YouTube, monitors |
| 4:3 | Traditional | Old TVs, tablets, iPad |
| 1:1 | Square | Instagram, profile photos |
| 9:16 | Portrait | Mobile video, TikTok and Reels |
