Tile Calculator

Tiles needed for any room size with waste factor

Tile Calculator

Room in feet, tile in inches

A tile calculator determines how many tiles are needed to cover a floor or wall area, including a waste allowance for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. Always order more tiles than the calculated minimum — getting an exact match later can be difficult.

💡

Tip: Buy from the same batch (dye lot) to ensure color consistency. Even tiles of the same style from different batches can have visible color variation.

  1. 1Calculate room area: length × width (in square feet)
  2. 2Calculate tile area: tile length × tile width (convert inches to feet)
  3. 3Divide room area by tile area to get base tile count
  4. 4Add waste factor: 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal, 20% for complex patterns
10×12 ft room with 12"×12" tiles, 10% waste=132 tiles120 sq ft × 1.10 / 1 sq ft each
8×10 ft room with 18"×18" tiles, 15% waste=47 tiles80 / 2.25 sq ft × 1.15 = 40.9 → 47
Tile Size / PatternRecommended Waste
Large tiles (18"+ square), straight lay5–10%
Standard tiles (12"), straight lay10%
Any tile, diagonal (45°) lay15%
Mosaic or complex pattern15–20%
Irregular shapes (penny, hex)15–25%
Herringbone pattern20%

Fun Fact

The Romans were among the first to use tiles systematically — Roman mosaics called "tesserae" were laid by specialist workers called "tessellarii." Some Roman tile floors have lasted over 2,000 years.
