Alcohol Units Calculator

Units of alcohol in drinks - UK weekly guidelines

🍺Alcohol Units Calculator (UK)

An alcohol unit (UK) is a standard measure of pure alcohol. One unit contains 10ml (8g) of pure ethanol. UK health guidelines recommend no more than 14 units per week for both men and women, spread across at least 3 days, with alcohol-free days each week.

💡

Tip: Alcohol is not processed faster by drinking water, eating food, or sleeping. Your liver metabolises approximately 1 unit per hour regardless of other actions.

  1. 1Units = Volume (ml) × ABV (%) ÷ 1000
  2. 2Example: 568ml pint of 4% beer = 568 × 4 ÷ 1000 = 2.27 units
  3. 3A 175ml glass of 13% wine = 2.28 units (often rounded to "2 units")
Pint of 4% lager (568ml)=2.3 unitsMost pub servings of beer are 2–2.5 units
Large glass wine 250ml at 13%=3.25 unitsOver 20% of the weekly guideline in one glass
Double spirit (50ml) at 40%=2.0 unitsA standard double measure
