Discount Calculator

%
A discount calculator determines the sale price, savings amount, and original price in discount scenarios. Understanding discounts prevents confusion between "25% off" and "you pay 25% of the price" — very different!
$200 item, 30% discount=Discount: $60, Sale price: $140
Sale price $85, original $100=Discount rate: 15%Saved $15
Sale price $76, 5% off=Original price: $80$80 × 0.95 = $76
Stacked discounts
20% off then 10% off is NOT 30% off. First discount: $100 → $80. Second: $80 → $72. Total savings: 28%, not 30%.
Sale tax on discounted price
Tax is applied to the final sale price, not the original. Buy $100 item for 20% off = $80. 8% tax on $80 = $6.40. Total = $86.40.

Fun Fact
Research shows shoppers perceive "50% extra free" as better value than "33% off" — even though they are mathematically identical (50 extra of 100 = 150 total = 33% discount).
