Exponent Calculator
An exponent (power) indicates how many times a base is multiplied by itself. Exponents appear in compound interest, scientific notation, computer storage, and virtually all of science.
- 1bⁿ means multiply b by itself n times
- 2b⁰ = 1 for any non-zero b
- 3b⁻ⁿ = 1/bⁿ (negative exponent = reciprocal)
- 4b^(1/n) = nth root of b (fractional exponent)
2¹⁰=1,0242×2×2×2×2×2×2×2×2×2
5⁻²=0.041/5² = 1/25
8^(1/3)=2Cube root of 8
10³=1,000Basis of metric kilo prefix
| Rule | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Product | aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ | 2³ × 2⁴ = 2⁷ = 128 |
| Quotient | aᵐ / aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ | 3⁵ / 3² = 3³ = 27 |
| Power of power | (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ | (2²)³ = 2⁶ = 64 |
| Zero exponent | a⁰ = 1 | 99⁰ = 1 |
| Negative | a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ | 4⁻² = 1/16 |
| Fractional | a^(m/n) = ⁿ√(aᵐ) | 8^(2/3) = ∛(64) = 4 |
