Exponent Calculator

An exponent (power) indicates how many times a base is multiplied by itself. Exponents appear in compound interest, scientific notation, computer storage, and virtually all of science.

  1. 1bⁿ means multiply b by itself n times
  2. 2b⁰ = 1 for any non-zero b
  3. 3b⁻ⁿ = 1/bⁿ (negative exponent = reciprocal)
  4. 4b^(1/n) = nth root of b (fractional exponent)
2¹⁰=1,0242×2×2×2×2×2×2×2×2×2
5⁻²=0.041/5² = 1/25
8^(1/3)=2Cube root of 8
10³=1,000Basis of metric kilo prefix
RuleFormulaExample
Productaᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ2³ × 2⁴ = 2⁷ = 128
Quotientaᵐ / aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ3⁵ / 3² = 3³ = 27
Power of power(aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ(2²)³ = 2⁶ = 64
Zero exponenta⁰ = 199⁰ = 1
Negativea⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ4⁻² = 1/16
Fractionala^(m/n) = ⁿ√(aᵐ)8^(2/3) = ∛(64) = 4
