A capsule is a cylinder with hemispherical ends. Volume = πr²h + (4/3)πr³ where h is the cylindrical height and r is the radius. Surface area = 2πrh + 4πr² (cylinder lateral + full sphere surface).
💡
Tip: A capsule volume equals a cylinder plus a sphere of the same radius. Calculate them separately and add.
- 1Total length = h + 2r (cylindrical part plus two hemispheres)
- 2Volume = π r²(h + 4r/3)
- 3Surface area = 2πr(h + 2r)
- 4A capsule with h=0 is just a sphere
r = 3 cm, h = 10 cm=V = 395.84 cm³, SA = 301.59 cm²π(9)(10 + 4) = 395.84
| Shape | Volume | Surface Area |
|---|---|---|
| Cylinder (r, h) | πr²h | 2πr(r+h) |
| Sphere (r) | (4/3)πr³ | 4πr² |
| Capsule (r, h) | πr²h + (4/3)πr³ | 2πrh + 4πr² |

Fun Fact
Capsule shapes (stadium shapes in 2D) are used for racetracks, pharmaceutical pill shapes, and spacecraft reentry vehicles — the rounded ends reduce stress concentration compared to sharp edges.
