Discount Calculator
$
%
A discount calculator computes the sale price after applying a percentage discount, the discount amount, or the original price from a sale price and discount percentage. Essential for retail pricing, coupon calculations, and negotiation.
💡
Tip: To calculate a discount quickly: "30% off $80" — find 10% ($8), multiply by 3 = $24 off, so $56. Or: 70% × $80 = $56 directly.
- 1Sale price = Original price × (1 − discount%)
- 2Discount amount = Original price × discount%
- 3Original price = Sale price / (1 − discount%)
- 4Successive discounts are NOT additive: 20% + 30% off ≠ 50% off
$120 item, 25% off=$90 sale price, $30 saved$120 × 0.75 = $90
Two successive discounts: 20% then 30%=Effective discount = 44%0.80 × 0.70 = 0.56 → 44% off, not 50%
| Discount | Multiply by | Example: $100 item |
|---|---|---|
| 10% off | 0.90 | $90 |
| 20% off | 0.80 | $80 |
| 25% off | 0.75 | $75 |
| 33% off | 0.67 | $67 |
| 50% off | 0.50 | $50 |
| 75% off | 0.25 | $25 |

Fun Fact
Retailers often use "anchoring" — showing a high original price crossed out next to the sale price. Studies show people perceive the same item as a better deal when they see a higher reference price, even if it was never actually sold at that price.
