PPI / Pixel Density Calculator
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) measures screen resolution density — how many pixels fit in one linear inch of a display. Higher PPI means sharper text and images. Apple branded 326+ PPI as 'Retina' — the point where individual pixels become indistinguishable at normal viewing distance.
💡
Tip: For printing: 300 DPI (dots per inch) is the standard for photo quality. Web images are typically 72–96 PPI — they look sharp on screen but print blurry when enlarged.
- 1PPI = √(width² + height²) / diagonal screen size (inches)
- 2Diagonal pixels = √(horizontal_res² + vertical_res²)
- 3Retina threshold ≈ 300 PPI at ~12 inch viewing distance
- 4Effective viewing PPI depends on viewing distance

| Laptop 15" | 100–220 PPI | 16–24 inches |
| Tablet 11" | 250–350 PPI | 12–16 inches |

Fun Fact
The human eye can distinguish individual pixels at about 1 arcminute of visual angle. At 12 inches, this works out to ~300 PPI — hence Apple's Retina threshold. Sitting further from a screen makes lower PPI look acceptable.
