A character counter counts characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time in a text. Essential for social media posts (Twitter: 280, LinkedIn: 3000), SMS (160 chars per segment), and SEO meta descriptions (150–160 chars).

💡

Tip: For SEO meta descriptions, aim for 150–155 characters — enough to convey a compelling message without being truncated in search results.

  1. 1Characters: count every character including spaces and punctuation
  2. 2Characters without spaces: exclude space characters
  3. 3Words: count sequences of non-space characters
  4. 4Reading time: average adult reads 238 words per minute

Fun Fact

The original Twitter 140-character limit was chosen to fit within the 160-character SMS limit, leaving 20 characters for a username. It was doubled to 280 in 2017.
