Blood volume estimation is used clinically for transfusion planning. Simple weight-based estimate: ~70 mL/kg (men), ~65 mL/kg (women).

Fórmula

Estimated blood volume = Body weight (kg) × 70 mL/kg (approximate); More precise: 7% of body weight in kg = volume in liters (adults)
BW
Body weight (kg)
BV
Blood volume (mL (or liters))

Guia passo a passo

  1. 1Male EBV ≈ 70 mL/kg
  2. 2Female EBV ≈ 65 mL/kg
  3. 370 kg adult male → ~4.9 L blood
  4. 4Blood is ~7–8% of body weight

Exemplos resolvidos

Entrada
75 kg female
Resultado
EBV ≈ 75 × 65 = 4,875 mL (4.9 L)

Perguntas frequentes

How much blood can I safely donate?

Standard donation: 450 mL (~8% of blood volume). Replaced within 24 hours. Plasma donation (safer): 650 mL × 1–2 times weekly. Whole blood: 6–8 weeks between donations.

What's blood volume used for clinically?

Transfusion volume calculations. Shock assessment: blood loss < 15% asymptomatic; 15–30% tachycardia; > 30% hypotension/collapse. Guides ICU management.

Does blood volume change?

Yes. Pregnancy: +30–50% (up to 5.5 L). Altitude: increased RBC production (higher blood volume). Chronic dehydration: lower effective volume (hemoconcentration).
