Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride) are lost in sweat and must be replaced during prolonged exercise. Sodium loss (~920mg/L) is most critical — replacing water without sodium can cause dangerous hyponatraemia.

Fun Fact

Hyponatraemia (low blood sodium from drinking too much plain water) has killed several marathon runners. "Drink to thirst" is now the evidence-based guideline — not "drink as much as possible."
