🐕Dog Age in Human Years
Dog age in human years converts your dog's chronological age into an equivalent human lifespan stage. Dogs age much faster than humans in their early years — a 1-year-old dog is already sexually mature, equivalent to a teenager — then slow down in later years.
- 1The American Heart Association 2019 formula uses: Human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31
- 2This replaces the old "multiply by 7" rule, which is inaccurate because dogs age rapidly in year 1
- 3A 1-year-old dog ≈ 31 human years (using ln formula)
- 4A 5-year-old dog ≈ 56 human years (not 35 as the ×7 rule suggests)
- 5Large breeds age faster than small breeds and have shorter lifespans
1 year old dog=~31 human yearsAHA formula: 16×ln(1)+31 = 31
5 year old dog=~57 human yearsNot 35 as the ×7 rule claims
10 year old dog=~68 human yearsSenior dog, equivalent to late middle age

Fun Fact
The old "×7" rule has no scientific basis. It was simply 70 (average human lifespan) divided by 10 (rough dog lifespan). The real relationship is logarithmic.
