Molarity Calculator

Calculate molar concentration of solutions

⚗️Molarity Calculator

Molarity (M) is the concentration of a solution, defined as the number of moles of solute dissolved per litre of solution. It is the most commonly used unit of concentration in chemistry.

💡

Tip: Always add concentrated acid to water — never the reverse — to avoid dangerous exothermic splashing.

  1. 1Count moles of solute (mass / molar mass)
  2. 2Measure volume of solution in litres
  3. 3Molarity M = moles / litres
  4. 4To prepare a solution: weigh moles × molar mass of solute, dissolve, transfer to volumetric flask, add solvent to the mark
5.85g NaCl (M=58.5) in 500ml water=0.2 M NaCl solutionmoles=0.1; 0.1/0.5=0.2M
0.5 mol/L × 2L=1.0 mol solute neededn = M × V
SolutionApproximate molarity
Seawater (NaCl)0.6 M
Blood (NaCl equivalent)0.15 M
Concentrated HCl12 M
Concentrated H₂SO₄18 M

Fun Fact

The term "molar" derives from the Latin moles, meaning "heap" or "mass." Avogadro's number (6.022×10²³) defines how many particles are in one mole.
