Convert between HP, kW, CV, PS and watts

Horsepower Calculator

Horsepower (hp) is a unit of power originally defined by James Watt to compare steam engine output to horse work. One mechanical horsepower = 745.7 watts. Metric horsepower (CV/PS) = 735.5 watts.

💡

Tip: Electric vehicles use kW for power ratings. Multiply by 1.34 to compare to ICE vehicle horsepower ratings.

Fun Fact

James Watt defined 1 horsepower as 33,000 foot-pounds per minute after observing mill horses in the 1780s.
