Plant Spacing Calculator
Plant spacing determines the distance between plants in a garden bed. Proper spacing prevents competition for light, water, and nutrients; allows good air circulation to prevent disease; and maximises yield per square metre.
- 1Spacing requirements vary dramatically by plant type and size
- 2Square foot gardening: divide 30×30cm squares into grid based on plant size
- 3Row spacing: typically 1–2× the in-row spacing
- 4Calculate plants per area: Area ÷ (spacing × spacing) for square grid
4m² bed, tomatoes at 60cm spacing=~11 plants4 ÷ (0.6 × 0.6) = 11.1 plants
4m² bed, lettuce at 20cm spacing=~100 plants4 ÷ (0.2 × 0.2) = 100 plants
| Vegetable | Between plants | Between rows |
|---|---|---|
| Tomatoes | 60–90cm | 90cm |
| Courgette | 90cm | 90cm |
| Lettuce | 20–30cm | 30cm |
| Carrots | 5–8cm | 30cm |
| Potatoes | 30–35cm | 60–75cm |
| Beans (dwarf) | 15cm | 45cm |
