Ideal weight formulas estimate a target weight based solely on height and sex. Multiple formulas exist (Robinson, Miller, Devine, Hamwi) and typically give similar but not identical results. No single formula is universally accepted — the "ideal" weight also depends on muscle mass, bone density, and individual health.
💡
Tip: A healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) often gives a more useful target weight window than any single formula. For someone 5'10", that is 129–174 lbs.
- 1All formulas start from a base weight at 5 feet (60 inches) height
- 2Add a fixed amount per inch (or cm) above that base
- 3Men generally have higher ideal weights than women at the same height
- 4Results are reference points — BMI 18.5–24.9 often gives a wider healthy range
Male, 5'10" (178 cm)=Robinson: 72kg, Devine: 75kg, Miller: 73kgAverage ~73 kg (161 lbs)
Female, 5'6" (168 cm)=Robinson: 62kg, Devine: 59kg, Miller: 64kgAverage ~62 kg (136 lbs)
| Formula | Base (lbs) | Per inch above 5ft |
|---|---|---|
| Robinson (1983) | 114.6 lbs | +4.2 lbs |
| Miller (1983) | 123.9 lbs | +3.1 lbs |
| Devine (1974) | 110.2 lbs | +5.1 lbs |
| Hamwi (1964) | 106 lbs | +6.0 lbs |

Fun Fact
The Devine formula was originally created in 1974 for drug dosing calculations — not for health goals. It has since been widely adopted as a rough weight reference despite this origin.
