Korean age (한국 나이) is a traditional age-counting system where everyone starts at age 1 at birth (representing the time spent in the womb), and everyone gains a year on 1 January rather than their individual birthday. South Korea officially abolished this system in June 2023 in favour of international age.
- 1At birth: Korean age = 1
- 2On each 1 January: add 1 to Korean age regardless of birthday
- 3Korean age = Current year − Birth year + 1
- 4Someone born on 31 December becomes 2 years old the very next day (1 January)

Born 31 December 2000, today is 2 January 2001=Korean age: 2Just 2 days old but already "2" in Korean age

Fun Fact
South Korea's National Assembly voted to standardise age counting in June 2023, ending centuries of the traditional system. Koreans can now legally be 1–2 years younger on official documents.
