Horsepower (HP) measures the rate of work an engine can perform. It is calculated from torque and RPM: HP = Torque × RPM / 5252. The constant 5252 comes from unit conversion (one horsepower = 550 ft-lb/sec × 60 sec × 2π).

Pro Tip
For daily driving, torque matters more than peak HP — torque determines acceleration from a stop. HP matters more at high speeds and sustained power output.

Did You Know?
James Watt invented the horsepower unit in the 1780s to compare his steam engines to horses. He observed that a horse could do 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute — and set that as 1 HP.
