Gay-Lussac's Law

P1/T1=P2/T2 at constant volume

⚗️Gay-Lussac's Law (P₁/T₁=P₂/T₂)

Gay-Lussac's Law states that at constant volume, the pressure of an ideal gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature. P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂. Heating a sealed container increases pressure proportionally.

  1. 1Convert temperatures to Kelvin
  2. 2Identify known P1, T1, and either P2 or T2
  3. 3P2 = P1 × T2/T1 or T2 = T1 × P2/P1
  4. 4Volume must remain constant
Pressure 100kPa at 300K · heated to 600K=Pressure = 200kPa100×600/300=200kPa — doubled as expected

Fun Fact

This law explains why aerosol cans warn against exposure to heat — a can in a fire can build up 2× or more its normal pressure and burst violently.
