Body Surface Area Calculator
Body Surface Area (BSA) is the measured or calculated surface of a human body. It is used in clinical medicine primarily for calculating chemotherapy dosages, cardiac index, and burn surface area. BSA is more accurate than weight alone for drug dosing because it correlates better with metabolic rate.
- 1DuBois & DuBois (1916): BSA = 0.007184 × height^0.725 × weight^0.425
- 2Mosteller (1987): BSA = √(height × weight / 3600)
- 3Height in cm, weight in kg; BSA in m²
- 4Average adult BSA: 1.73 m² (used as reference in eGFR)
70 kg, 175 cm (DuBois)=BSA ≈ 1.84 m²
60 kg, 165 cm (Mosteller)=BSA ≈ 1.61 m²
| Group | Average BSA | Weight Range |
|---|---|---|
| Neonate | 0.25 m² | ~3.5 kg |
| Child (10 yr) | 1.14 m² | ~32 kg |
| Female adult | 1.60 m² | ~60 kg |
| Male adult | 1.90 m² | ~80 kg |
| Obese adult | 2.20+ m² | >120 kg |
