How to Calculate Your Ovulation Window

Knowing when you ovulate is valuable whether you're trying to conceive or avoiding pregnancy naturally. Ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before your next periodβ€”not necessarily 14 days after your last period, which is a common misconception.

The Basic Calculation

Ovulation Day β‰ˆ Cycle Length βˆ’ 14

This gives the approximate day of your cycle (counting from day 1 = first day of period) when ovulation occurs.

Example: 28-day cycle Ovulation day = 28 βˆ’ 14 = Day 14

Example: 32-day cycle Ovulation day = 32 βˆ’ 14 = Day 18

Fertile Window

Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. An egg is viable for 12–24 hours after ovulation. This creates a fertile window of approximately 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself.

Fertile Window = Ovulation Day βˆ’ 5 to Ovulation Day

For a 30-day cycle (ovulation on Day 16): Fertile window = Days 11–16 of your cycle.

Confirming Ovulation

Basal body temperature (BBT): Your temperature rises 0.2–0.5Β°C after ovulation due to progesterone. Chart your temperature every morning before getting out of bed.

LH surge tests: Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the luteinizing hormone surge that triggers ovulation, usually 24–36 hours before ovulation occurs. These are the most reliable home method for predicting (not just confirming) ovulation.

Cervical mucus: Around ovulation, cervical mucus becomes clear and stretchy ("egg white" consistency), ideal for sperm transport.

Irregular Cycles

For irregular cycles, the "14 days before next period" rule is less reliable. Tracking BBT and LH surges over several months gives a more personalized picture.
