How to Calculate Roof Pitch
Roof pitch describes the steepness of a roof as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, typically expressed as "X/12" (X inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run). Understanding pitch is essential for calculating roof area, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring proper drainage.
Expressing Pitch
Ratio format: 4/12 = 4 inches rise per 12 inches run Decimal: 4/12 = 0.333 Degrees: arctan(4/12) = 18.4ยฐ
Converting Between Formats
Degrees = arctan(Rise / Run)
Pitch ratio = Rise / 12
Example: A roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches: 6/12 pitch = arctan(6/12) = 26.6ยฐ
Common Roof Pitches
| Pitch | Degrees | Category | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/12โ3/12 | 4.8ยฐโ14ยฐ | Low | Commercial, sheds |
| 4/12โ6/12 | 18.4ยฐโ26.6ยฐ | Moderate | Most homes |
| 7/12โ9/12 | 30.3ยฐโ36.9ยฐ | Steep | Colonial, Victorian |
| 10/12โ12/12 | 39.8ยฐโ45ยฐ | Very steep | Cape Cod, A-frame |
Calculating Roof Area from Pitch
The roof multiplier converts horizontal footprint to actual sloped roof area:
Roof Multiplier = โ(1 + (pitch/12)ยฒ)
For 6/12 pitch: โ(1 + 0.25) = โ1.25 = 1.118
If your home's footprint is 1,500 sq ft: Actual roof area = 1,500 ร 1.118 = 1,677 sq ft
Minimum Pitch for Roofing Materials
| Material | Minimum Pitch |
|---|---|
| Standing seam metal | 1/12 |
| Asphalt shingles | 2/12 |
| Wood shakes | 3/12 |
| Concrete/clay tile | 4/12 |
