Splitting a bill fairly — whether equally or by what each person ordered — is a daily calculation. Here is every method explained clearly.

Method 1: Equal Split

The simplest approach. Everyone pays the same amount regardless of what they ordered.

Per Person = (Subtotal + Tax + Tip) ÷ Number of People

Example: Dinner for 4, subtotal $120, tax $10.20 (8.5%), tip 20%:

  • Tip = $120 × 0.20 = $24
  • Total = $120 + $10.20 + $24 = $154.20
  • Per person = $154.20 ÷ 4 = $38.55 each

Method 2: Pay What You Ordered

Each person pays for their own items plus their share of shared costs.

Steps:

  1. Calculate the total before tax and tip
  2. Each person's share of the pre-tax subtotal = their items' cost ÷ subtotal
  3. Apply that percentage to the total (including tax and tip)
Share % = Your Items ÷ Subtotal
Your Total = Share % × (Subtotal + Tax + Tip)

Example: Four people, subtotal $120:

  • Alice ordered $35 → 35/120 = 29.2% → owes $154.20 × 0.292 = $45.00
  • Bob ordered $28 → 28/120 = 23.3% → owes $154.20 × 0.233 = $35.93
  • Carol ordered $32 → 32/120 = 26.7% → owes $154.20 × 0.267 = $41.17
  • Dave ordered $25 → 25/120 = 20.8% → owes $154.20 × 0.208 = $32.07
  • Total: $154.17 (≈$154.20, rounding difference)

Method 3: Tip on Your Share Only

Some people prefer to tip only on their own subtotal. This is mathematically identical to Method 2 — applying your percentage to the full total includes your proportional share of the tip.

Calculating Tip Quickly

Mental tip calculation:

  • 10%: Move decimal left one place ($120 → $12)
  • 15%: 10% + half of 10% ($12 + $6 = $18)
  • 20%: Double the 10% ($12 × 2 = $24)
  • 18%: 10% + 8% ≈ 10% + (10% - 20% of 10%) = $12 + $9.60 = $21.60
Tip = Subtotal × Tip Percentage
Total = Subtotal + Tax + Tip

Recommended Tip Percentages (US 2025)

ServiceTip Percentage
Sit-down restaurant (good service)18–22%
Excellent service25%+
Buffet10%
Food delivery15–20%
Counter service (coffee shop)Optional, 10–15%
Taxi / rideshare15–20%
Bartender$1–2 per drink, or 15–20%

Note: Tip percentages should generally be calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total including tax. In practice, many people tip on the full total — the difference is minor.

Splitting With Shared Dishes

For shared appetisers, bottles of wine, or desserts:

Option A: Add shared items to the subtotal before dividing. Everyone pays equally for shared items.

Option B: Split shared items equally, then add each person's own items:

Shared Cost per Person = Shared Items Total ÷ Number of People
Individual Total = Your Items + Shared Cost per Person

Example: $30 shared appetiser between 4 people:

  • Each person owes $7.50 for the appetiser plus their own entrée

Handling Alcohol

If some people drank and others didn't, separate alcohol from food:

  1. Sum all alcohol charges
  2. Split alcohol equally among drinkers
  3. Split food charges by preferred method among everyone
  4. Combine both totals per person

Quick Formula for Any Bill

Your Share = (Your Food + Shared Items ÷ Party Size) × (1 + Tax Rate) × (1 + Tip Rate)

Example: Your food = $28, 1/4 share of $30 appetiser, 8.5% tax, 20% tip:

  • Base = $28 + $7.50 = $35.50
  • With tax: $35.50 × 1.085 = $38.52
  • With tip: $38.52 × 1.20 = $46.22
