How to Calculate Percent Yield

What is Percent Yield?

Percent yield compares the actual amount of product obtained in a reaction to the theoretical maximum (calculated from stoichiometry). It reflects efficiency and accounts for side reactions, incomplete reactions, and purification losses.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1Calculate theoretical yield from stoichiometry using limiting reagent
  2. 2Weigh or measure actual product obtained
  3. 3Percent yield = (Actual yield / Theoretical yield) × 100%

Worked Examples

Input
Theoretical yield 25g · Actual product 18g
Result
Percent yield = 72%
18/25×100=72%
