How to Calculate Waist-to-Hip Ratio

What is Waist-to-Hip Ratio?

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) compares the circumference of the waist to the hips. High WHR indicates central (abdominal/visceral) obesity, which is more strongly associated with cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome than peripheral fat.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1WHR = Waist circumference / Hip circumference
  2. 2Measure waist at narrowest point (navel level)
  3. 3Measure hips at widest point of buttocks
  4. 4WHO thresholds: men > 0.90 = high risk; women > 0.85 = high risk

Worked Examples

Input
Male: waist 92cm · hip 100cm
Result
WHR = 0.92 → high risk
Above 0.90 threshold for men
