A mulch calculator determines how many cubic yards of mulch or bark chips are needed to cover a garden bed to a specified depth. Mulch conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and improves soil as it decomposes.
💡
Tip: Buy mulch by the cubic yard from bulk suppliers when covering more than ~6 cubic yards (162 sq ft at 3"). Bulk mulch is 30–50% cheaper per cubic yard than bagged. Use a tarp to protect your driveway.
- 1Volume = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) / 324 = cubic yards
- 2Rule: 1 cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch depth
- 3Recommended depth: 2–4 inches (too thin = weeds, too thick = root rot)
- 4Around trees: keep mulch 3–6 inches away from trunk ("mulch volcano" harms trees)
| Depth | Coverage | Bags (2 cu ft each) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 324 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | 6.75 bags |
| 3 inches (standard) | 108 sq ft | 4.5 bags |
| 4 inches (heavy) | 81 sq ft | 3.4 bags |
| 6 inches (drainage) | 54 sq ft | 2.25 bags |

Fun Fact
The US uses about 20 million cubic yards of mulch per year. Wood chip mulch from arborists is often free — many tree companies will deliver chips directly to homeowners rather than paying disposal fees.
