Computer storage is measured in bytes and their multiples. A byte consists of 8 bits. The industry uses two overlapping systems: binary (IEC standard, powers of 1,024) used by operating systems, and decimal (SI, powers of 1,000) used by hard drive manufacturers — causing the apparent "missing" space.
