Countdown Timer
A countdown timer calculates the time remaining from now until a future date and time, broken down into years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Used for events, deadlines, product launches, and time-sensitive goals.
💡
Tip: When counting down to a deadline, display business days separately from calendar days. A 30-day deadline might only give 20 working days to complete tasks — critically different for project planning.
- 1Calculate the difference between the target date and now
- 2Break into components: years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds
- 3Update dynamically (if interactive) or calculate static snapshot
- 4Account for time zones if the target is in a different locale
| Remaining | Total days | Business days |
|---|---|---|
| 1 week | 7 days | 5 days |
| 1 month | 28–31 days | 20–23 days |
| 100 days | 100 days | ~71 days |
| 1 year | 365 or 366 days | ~261 days |
| End of year from Jan 1 | 365 or 366 days | ~261 days |

Fun Fact
Countdown clocks were invented for the German film "Frau im Mond" (Woman in the Moon, 1929) by director Fritz Lang for dramatic effect. NASA adopted the countdown for rocket launches and the practice became universal in spaceflight.
